    Regarding the settlement at Whananaki, and seeking advise about how to prevent the land being sold to Pakeha. Another letter from Tamihana Te Puai, also dated May 11, 1850 to both Henry Williams and Governor Grey, is included, it states that the sale had been made fraudulently, and declares Te Puai ownership of the Pikiparia and Mariri blocks.

    Hori Kingi Warerahi was a leading chief of the Ngapuhi - Ngai Tawake hapu. He was the fifth signatory of The Treaty of Waitangi � Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and had previously signed the Declaration of Independence in 1835. He was known as a peacekeeper, and often acted as a mediator between settlers and the interests of Maori. Both Henry Williams and Samuel Marsden shared a beneficial relationship with him.
