Provenance: Photograph was formerly in the possession of the donor's husband, Mr Cecil Elmer Downes (1878-1951), commercial traveller, of Auckland, who was one of the survivors of the wreck of the SS 'Penguin'.

On the night of 12 February 1909, the steamship 'Penguin' struck Thoms Rock, near Cape Terawhiti, during a heavy gale and sank with the loss of 75 (some estimates put this figure at 72) lives. John Mcmenamin, who owned a farm not far from where many of the survivors were washed ashore, and his family gave aid to the survivors.
