Subject Notes
Sarah Harriet Selwyn (nee Richardson - 1809-1907) was the daughter of Court Judge, Sir John Richardson. In 1839 she married George Augustus Selwyn, who would become the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand. The pair immigrated to New Zealand in 1842. She was known affectionately among Maori as Mata Pihopa (Mother Bishop), but her time in New Zealand was lonely and isolated and she suffered constantly from ill health. In 1868, the Selwyn family returned to England and Sarah's life was reinvigorated.
