  • Subject Notes
Henry Blencowe Matthews, commonly known as Blen, was born at Kaitaia on 23 June 1861. He was the eldest son of Richard and Clarissa Isabella Matthews. Richard Matthews was an amateur botanist specializing in Orchidaceae. In 1882 Henry married Evelyn Subritzky. They had six children and divorced in 1891. Ten years later he married Elizabeth Eleanor Matthews, the widow of his youngest uncle, Samuel Hayward Ford Matthews. Richard Matthews and friend Harry Carse had a shared interest in botany and would often embark on sample collecting expeditions. Richard enlisted the help of his sons, including Blen, who was four years younger than Carse. Blen and Harry became firm friends and continued collecting specimens, some of which were deposited in the Auckland Institute and Museum.
