Letter from Edmund Hillary to brother Rex and sister-in-law Jenny, 20 May 1953

documentary heritage
  • Description

Air letter written by Edmund Hillary, British Mount Everest Expedition, Nepal, to his brother Rex and sister-in-law Jenny, Auckland, New Zealand, dated 20 May 1953. Written from Camp IV Advanced Base in the Western Cwm [Valley], Hillary states that the main assault has already started.

He expresses frustration with the lack of progress made by George Lowe at Camp VII (24,200 feet) due to both changeable weather conditions and what Hillary perceives to be a "certain lack of drive." He tells Rex and Jenny that this letter will be the last they will receive from him before the big attempt on the summit. Overall, Hillary seems pleased with his level of fitness, having climbed as high as Camp VII with relative ease. Despite this, he is still very mindful of the task and the potential risks ahead and is clearly cautious about the experimental nature of the oxygen equipment. Following on from this, Hillary reiterates to Rex his two wishes should anything go wrong: "that Mother should be looked after & secondly that my Himalayan gear should go to the NZAC [New Zealand Alpine Club] for their use." He concludes by reaffirming his admiration for the team "a damn good bunch of boys" and the close comradeship he shares with them.
