Letter from Edmund Hillary to sister-in-law Jenny [Hillary], 11 July 1953

documentary heritage
  • Description

Air letter written by Edmund Hillary, Norwich, Norfolk, England, to his sister-in-law Jenny [Hillary], Papakura, [Auckland], New Zealand, dated 11 July 1953. Hillary writes that he and Rex are about to begin attending a large number of official functions, including a garden party at Buckingham Palace and also meeting HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Hillary mentions the Himalayan Committee's keenness for him to write a book as a follow-on from the expedition book and for him to consider the many world-wide requests to deliver public lectures. He acknowledges the burden that Rex will have to bear in the short term concerning the family beekeeping business, but still expresses a desire to maintain an active interest in it and to return to it the following season.
