Letter from Edmund Hillary to brother Rex and sister-in-law Jenny, 2 July 1954

documentary heritage
  • Description

Air letter written by Edmund Hillary, Khatmandu [Kathmandu], [Nepal], to his brother Rex and sister-in-law Jenny, Papakura, [Auckland], New Zealand, dated 2 July 1954. Having now nearly recovered from the injuries he sustained whilst climbing in the Barun Valley during the New Zealand Alpine Club Himalayan expedition, Hillary makes light of his weight loss and sore ribs.

He remarks on the success of the expedition (16 peaks climbed over 20,000 feet) but also the personal toll it had taken on his health. The responsibilities of being an expedition leader are also mentioned, as is the worry Hillary experienced with the rescue of Jim McFarlane, who, along with fellow climber Brian Wilkins, fell into a crevasse on the Barun Glacier and was badly injured.
