Letter from Archdeacon Henry Williams to the Church Missionary Society, February 21, 1848

documentary heritage
  • Description

Forwarding the half yearly papers of the C.M.S., and discussing his recent trip to Wangaroa and Kaitaia. Williams observed a marked difference in these settlements, where 'there is much that is good' in the villages around Kaitaia, due to their proximity to 'civilization.' In Wangaroa, Williams saw a dramatic decrease in the attendance of native Christians, only 10% of what it was four years earlier.

Williams also mentions that the newspaper published information stating that Ruaparaha had adopted a hymn as a war song. Williams goes on to write on the Land Question, and his want to purchase the 'Blue Books,' in order to know the proceedings of Governor Grey respecting the missionaries and New Zealand. Williams compared the situation in New Zealand with that of Tahiti under the French Government. Finally, he writes of the Committee discussions on Missionary and Assistant Missionary Salaries, relative to his own sons, Mr. Hadfield, and Mr. Davies. He briefly mentions the Bishops decision not to commit Samuel Williams to Holy Orders, while the family own more than 2560acres of land.
