documentary heritage
  • Description

In this letter Jane shares with Catherine how she felt about her family's move from Paihia to Waimate. She writes of their new (but unfinished) weatherboard house, the diminished population of the settlement, and the cold climate. She also writes of her gratitude that their new station was only a half days journey from their friends and family. Further, a brief mention is made of the Irish couple attached to their new household, who would assist the Williams in their duties.

  • Subject Notes
Jane Williams (nee Nelson 1801-1896) was the wife of William Williams, and a force for Missionary work in her own right. Trained as a school teacher, she taught Maori women and girls the art of domestic 'English' life. During her husbands frequent absences, Jane managed the day to day running of their mission. She is remembered as a bright, intelligent, courageous and cheerful soul.
