Letter from Marianne Williams to Jane Williams March 19, 1845

documentary heritage
  • Description

Expressing her gratitude for Janes letters, which she described as 'a gleam of comfort.' Marianne writes of the Battle of Kororareka, and describes her fear that her family would be excluded from communication now that their township had been plundered and burnt. She writes of Te Ruki Kawiti, and of the Bishop Selwyn, of Captain Wright's cottage, and of the almost constant fires since the siege.

Marianne writes of the charges of treason brought against her husband Henry Williams by Lord Philpott. Finally, she mentions the augmentation of reports on how many people were killed in the battles, and writes that to her knowledge around 700 to 1000 Maori were engaged, and between 30 and 40 were killed.

Jane Williams (nee Nelson 1801-1896) was the wife of William Williams, and a force for Missionary work in her own right. Trained as a school teacher, she taught Maori women and girls the art of domestic 'English' life. During her husbands frequent absences, Jane managed the day to day running of their mission. She is remembered as a bright, intelligent, courageous and cheerful soul.
