Letter from Marianne Williams to Jane Williams, April 4, 1845

    Regarding the movements of missionaries following the Battle of Kororareka, including the Busby, Wright, and Hinkstone families. Marianne writes that her daughters Catherine and Caroline as well as her son John would be leaving Paihia. She goes on to give an account of events relating to the conflict. She writes of Tamati Waka and Hone Hekes battle, and reports that one person on each side died, five were injured on Hekes side and two on Wakas.

    One of Hone Hekes men was also reported to have killed a Rangatira (Chief). Marianne then writes of the school house at Waimate being under threat. She explains how they had been prepared for sudden flight, and always had a few things ready in a carpet bag to head to Paroa Pa if need be. Finally, she writes of the accusation of treason brought against her husband , Henry Williams, by Lieutenant Philpot Commander of the H.M.S Hazard.

    Jane Williams (nee Nelson, 1801-1896) was the wife of William Williams, and a force for Missionary work in her own right. Trained as a school teacher, she taught Maori women and girls the art of domestic 'English' life. During her husbands frequent absences, Jane managed the day to day running of their mission. She is remembered as a bright, intelligent, courageous and cheerful soul.
