documentary heritage
  • Description

Regarding their situation amidst the Northern War. Marianne writes how Kawiti and his men had shot all of Captain Wrights cattle, and had plundered the Busby house, and mentions that her sons homes at Pakaraka and Pukeraurunga [sic] had been looted, their crops consumed, and their fences burned. She goes on to write of Hone Heke and Tamati Waka Nene, who were fighting near the lake between Waimate and Hokianga.

Next, she writes of her two daughters who had fled, along with three of Mrs Kemps and two of Mrs Clendon's daughters in the North Star alongside Mrs Burrows, Mrs King, the Fords, the Greenways, the Edmonds, and five other families from Waimate and Tepuna. Others such as Mr Telford and the Press, Mrs Stanly's furniture, Mrs Clendon, Wright, and Hinkstone all remained. Finally, she writes of maintaining the school in the stone house throughout the conflicts, and lastly, asks Elizabeth to pass on her regards to Mrs Livingstone.
