Letter from Marianne Williams to Marianne Davies, March 18, 1851

documentary heritage
  • Description

Written from 'The Retreat.' Mrs Williams writes of the gratifying return of her son Thomas Coldham Williams after a three month absence. She also writes of her daughters Mary and Kate, who were to leave the following day with the Clarke family and Margaret Hobbs, bound for Wellington. Then she writes of the ships and mail she was awaiting. Next, as a consequence of a little ones illness, she begins to reminisce.

She writes of the sound of children's feet running across her veranda and past her window "I used to delight to hear the sound." Next, she goes on to write of the removal of Henry Williams from the Church Missionary Society, and the reaction of the Maori who were under his instruction. In consequence, chiefs of the surrounding areas had come to visit Henry Williams, as had the Maori women under convoy of Parata come to visit Marianne. She writes: "I had a “Tira” 10 native women from Paihia! under convoy of Parata (Puraia)[sic] & 2 youths making 13! Fanny (Hemi’s wife) walked first. Mrs Cook, Mrs Fox – Ripeka (the teacher’s wife), Ruta (old John Tapu’s widow) Harriet (no mere) Mere Paraku & 3 other women all leading^ women of my old Sunday school. It was quite a throng & affecting scene. We all went to the front veranda to receive them as the troop walked up so hearty & affectionate! They brought peaches, kumara & new corn to present us with. Kate said she would write you an account of their visit, their admiration of Pakaraka! the Church! the window (“me kamea te ahua”) the garden! etc, etc was unbounded."
