Letter from Mary Williams to William Williams, Monday July 18, 1820

documentary heritage
  • Description

In this letter Mrs Williams shares with William the recent activities of her daily life, as well as news from their friends and family. She writes of travelling by Coach rather than Chaise to visit their uncles Marsh and Henry and saving money on the mode of transport. She comments on Henry's excellent home, which wanted nothing but a coat of paint.

She writes of its wonderfully kept garden (used occasionally as a bowling green) shaded by beautiful old trees, and of the quaint green house at the back. The folding glass doors of the main house, she writes, opened directly onto the garden and the portal was decorated with the finest Geraniums. Mrs Williams goes on to write of their visit to the newly built St Johns Chapel, where [Henry] had engaged to play the organ. Finally, she asks her son to arrange and collect some materials for the renovation of their own house.
