    Item 9 -- Pilotage Exemption Certificate (No. 261) issued to Cardinal Sainty, Master of the Colonial Trading vessel 'Syren', into and out of the Port of Auckland, by the Customs Department (Marine Branch), dated 23 November 1874.

    Item 10 -- Auckland Harbour Board Pilot Certificate for the Port of Auckland issued to Cardinal Sainty, dated 9 June 1896.

    Item 11 -- Facsimiles of 1840 proclamations by Governor William Hobson produced by the 'New Zealand Herald' on 29 January 1890 (Supplement page 4). The supplement also notes that the original proclamations by Hobson are held by the Auckland Institute & Museum (Ref. nos. MS-413 and MS-414). [FRAGILE]

  • Born at Wivenhoe, Essex, England, in 1834, Cardinal Sainty came to New Zealand as Chief Officer of the ship 'Siam' in 1845. For 29 years he was a pilot for the Auckland Harbour Board. He died at Devonport, Auckland, on 16 October 1914, aged 82 years.
