Letter from William Williams to Catherine Heathcote, February 28, 1839

documentary heritage
  • Description

Announcing the birth of his sixth child, Anna Maria Williams and inviting Catherine to share the news throughout her community of Southwell, England. Williams goes on to write of the arrival of the recently ordained deacon Octavius Hadfield. Hadfield was directed to Waimate to assist Williams with the English boys school. Mr Taylor, who was intended to replace Williams at Waimate, had not yet arrived despite leaving England two years prior.

Williams hoped that once the school was staffed his family would move to Poverty Bay Turanganui-a-kiwa, a place he felt held great opportunity but was difficult to populate. Williams then moves to discuss the situation with the New Zealand Association, he writes "... I fear they will not be able to prevent the Colonization of the country...if settlers are to come let them go where they may be of least injury to the natives." Next, he recalls the visit from the Bishop of Australia and the Confirmation he held at Paihia. Lastly, Williams asks after his sister Mary and again to encourage Catherine to turn her course towards New Zealand.
