Report from William Williams to the Earl of Chichester, 1842

documentary heritage
  • Description

Report sent to the Earl of Chichester, President of the Church Missionary Society (CMS), February 23, 1842. Williams writes in responce to a letter by Mr Somes contained within the "Papers relating to New Zealand" printed by order of the House of Commons. Mr Somes specifically referenced Williams petition of 1840. In this responce Williams denies bringing any accusations against the New Zealand Company for their purchasing of land between Port Nicholson and Ahuriri.

He asserts however, that his intentions were to bring the accusations against the master of a trading vessel, for offering 'so inadequate a consideration as the two sums of 72 and 85 pounds.' He then defends his statement that there was no land between East Cape and Wairoa available to support Europeans without depriving Maori. However, he knew no objection to settlement between Port Nicholson and Ahuriri. Next, Williams defends his brother Henry Williams, who was accused by the Company of purchasing 40 acres of land in an underhanded deal, as outlined in Colonel Wakefields letter of May 25, 1840.

Included are Henry Williams own letters on the matter.
