Letter from William Williams to Edward G. Marsh, August 24, 1842

documentary heritage
  • Description

Regarding William and Janes trip from the Eastern District to the Bay of Islands. Although they intended to attend a meeting of the General Committee, the meeting could not be held due to the inability of missionaries from the middle district to attend. William also writes of the Bishop Selwyns visit to the Bay, and descibes his favourable disposition to meet the missionaries needs while promoting the welfare of the natives [sic].

Next, he reports on the state of the Waimate school, which was a topic of lengthy conversation with the Bishop. Under the care of Mr Taylor, Williams writes, the school was likely to die a natural death. Most of the children had been withdrawn due to Taylor's lack of attention. Williams suggests the Society provide a small sum to missionary parents so that they could send their children to where there was an appropriate facility. Other matters, such as the religious college and the placement of missionaries [Messrs Slack, Baker, Chapman] are also discussed.
