Letter from William Williams to Leonard Williams, July 4, 1845

documentary heritage
  • Description

Williams writes to his son about his expectations around his study at St Johns College in Auckland. He encourages Leonard to spend his spare time on general reading and suggests it would be best conducted in the privacy of Samuels room. Williams then shares news of his young daughter Marianne and the progress of their new home. He tells Leonard that he was conducting morning school at Kaupapa, where an average of thirty Maori students attended.

Next he writes "Your warlike preparation at Auckland will give you some idea of what war must be upon a large scale. The precautions which have been taken, will I hope, prevent any breach of the peace." Lastly, Williams instructs Leonard to thank William Cotton for sending the account of the Moa.
