documentary heritage
  • Description

Williams begins this letter with a commentary of the Northern War, he writes "I find Ruku of the Kawakawa, who refused to listen to my brothers expostulations about the horse stealing and said he should not be satisfied until he had tasted Pakeha flesh, has been called to his account.

Kawiti too, who without any pretence for a quarrel with the English, but a savage thirst for plunder, has had a severe remuneration, as report says he has lost two sons besides multitudes of other relatives. He is wagin war with the Governor, but while all his tribe is in the way to be cut off, the Governor loses no relative." Next, Williams writes of missionaries such as William Colenso, who was suffering from a severe fever, and James Hamlin who was a guest in Williams home. Charles Baker, George Kissling and Mr Stack were expected for a huihuinga [meeting].
