Subject Notes
William Leonard Williams (1829-1916), known affectionately as Leonard Williams or Mita Renata, was the first son of William and Jane Williams. He completed his secondary education at various mission stations throughout New Zealand, and gained his Bachelor's degree with Honours from Oxford University, England. He then offered himself to the Church Missionary Society and was admitted to Deacons Orders in May 1853. Later that same year he married Sarah Wanklyn, a woman he met while visiting his aunt Catherine Heathcote in Southwell, and the pair sailed for New Zealand to take up missionary duties alongside Leonards parents.
