    1 tape bound scrapbook containing 164 photographic prints, correspondence, press clippings and ephemera relating to Sir Edmund Hillary and the 1957 British Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition.

    Newspaper clippings taken from local newspapers such as The Auckland Star, Weekly News, Airarapa Times-Age and international newspapers, The New York Times and El Noticiero Universal. The newspaper clippings discuss the progress of the New Zealand Antarctic Expedition and it's team as well as the experiences of their families remaining in New Zealand. Newspaper cartoons also included.

    Correspondence includes telegrams to and from Sir Edmund Hillary, a Note of congratulations to Sir Edmund Hillary from Richard E. Byrd, Jr. 1958. Letters from Hillary's nephews Brett and John Hillary requesting that Hillary bring back a present of a live penguin.

    Ephemera includes three commemorative postcards of Captain Scott, Menu and toast list for a 1957 mid winter dinner, hand drawn picture of Sir Edmund Hillary with a penguin. Text reads: "For Ed. Good luck! Paul. Pram Point 3 February 1957'. Illustration of Sir Edmund Hillary "Midwinter's Day Scott Base 1957"

    Prints include photographs of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition team at work, images of camp and living quarters, dogs teams, snocats and the Antarctic landscape. Images of Sir Edmund Hillary, Vivian Fuchs, Peter Mulgrew and other members of the expedition. Celebrations on return to New Zealand.
