    Gideon Smales was a Wesleyan missionary who arrived in the Hokianga in 1840 and was involved in mission work there among local Maori, including Wairau, Aotea and Porirua from 1840 to 1856. He negotiated between Te Rauparaha and Wakefield. Smales retired to East Tamaki.
