James McKain Meek was born on 15 June 1815, at Gorleston, Norfolk, England. He went to New Zealand sometime around 1874 and stayed for approximately 15 years until moving to Australia. He was a prolific and eccentric draughtsman who was best known for his extraordinary penmanship in creating such things as illuminated addresses, atlases, and family trees. Meek died at Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, on 9 June 1899, aged 83 years.
