  • Charles Edward Werner [born Carl Eduard Werner] was born on 10 February 1857, at Peitz, near Cottbus, Brandenburg, Germany. He was one of a number of German migrants who came to New Zealand in 1875 aboard the ship 'Fritz Reuter'. Early in 1885 Werner married Charlotte Mary Flinn. They had four sons and one daughter. On 29 June 1888 Werner became a naturalised New Zealand citizen. He was for 20 years a storekeeper at Great Barrier Island, during which time he was also an agent for the pigeongram service at Okupu (Blind Bay) in the early 1900s, before moving to Kaitaia, Northland, where he was a watchmaker and jeweller for 14 years. The later years of his life were spent at Otahuhu, Auckland. Charles Werner died on 13 November 1927, at Otahuhu, aged 70 years.
