  • Description

    Approximately 3,600 legal deeds (chiefly conveyance and probate) as well as ledgers, deeds files, deeds registers and financial records. The earliest deed dates from 1854. The collection is arranged according to Phillips Nicholson's own system (PN numbers). Boxes 1 - 29 contain deeds, and boxes 30 - 40 contain ledgers, registers and financial records in bound volumes.

    An alphabetical index of clients' names with a brief description of the type of document and date is provided.

    Nicholson Gribbin was an early Auckland legal firm that later changed its name to Phillips Nicholson. Today it practises under the name Phillips Fox. Oliver Nicholson was admitted to the practice in 1886 and some time in the 1890s he entered into partnership with Edmund Augustus McKechnie. Subsequently, Nicholson was joined by George Arthur Gribbin. Phillips Nicholson acted for Edward Earle Vaile in his bequests to the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
