  • Provenance Details
Provenance: These papers came to the Library in the early 1980's. (An anecdotal account has it that the collection was destined for the dump and that a Library staff member rescued them from a lawyer's home). The documents relating to the Firm's Maori clients, emanating from the period when Edmund T. Dufaur was in practice by himself, appears to have been separated from the rest of the collection, as were the certificates belonging to Noel Leslie Biss. The documents relating to Maori clients were sorted and arranged by Jenny Curnow, and the other documents were sorted into alphabetical order by a library volunteer (Andrew Law) in 1993.

Edmund Thomas Dufaur (1849-1901) was born in London, the son of Frederick Dufaur, who came out to New Zealand in 1865. He married Louisa Konui, of Thames, in 1896, and practised on his own as a solicitor until 1899, when Charles Edward MacCormick (1862-1945) joined him in partnership. Later partners were Robert Butler Lusk (1867-1946), Noel Leslie Holm Biss (1870-1925) and Robert Edwin Fawcett (c.1888-1954). The Firm later became Cairns Slane Fitzgerald and Phillips.
