Pathfinder: Wings In A Crowded Sky

documentary heritage
  • Description

Typescript volume (30 cm) based on the diaries kept by NZ414352 Flight Lieutenant Leicester [George] Smith, DFC, RNZAF and RAF, during World War II. Entries cover a period from 27 July 1941 to about mid-October 1946.

Smith describes his early training in New Zealand at Levin (Initial Training Wing) and Harewood, Christchurch (Elementary Flying School), and then in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme (also known as the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan). Most of this work focuses on Smith's time spent flying with 128 Squadron at Wyton, Huntingdonshire, England, and the many air operations he flew over Europe. (pp. 1-184)
