These include his childhood at Milton, his schooling, early working life at the Botany Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Wellington, his war service as a signalman attached to 23 Battalion in the Middle East and Italy, and his post-war career as a horticulturalist in both New Zealand and Australia.
