John Aldred Luxford was born on 26 March 1854, in the Hutt Valley, Wellington, New Zealand. Educated at the school of the Reverend W. Fell, and later Wellington Grammar School, he entered the Methodist ministry at Canterbury College in 1875, where he trained under the Reverend Joseph Berry.

In 1880 he married Emma Allen Mansfield, the daughter of the Reverend John Aldred.

In 1902 he was chaplain to the 10th New Zealand Contingent during the Anglo-Boer War.

During World War I he served as chaplain with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt and Gallipoli, where he lost a leg at Chunuk Bair on 9 October 1915. He was also chaplain at No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England. He returned to New Zealand in September, 1916, having attained the rank of Chaplain Class I and being awarded the Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). A prominent Freemason, having filled the position of Worshipful Master for two terms, and also that of provincial Grand Chaplain, he died - as a direct result of the injuries he sustained during his war service - on 28 January 1921, at Remuera, Auckland, aged 66 years.
