Provenance: Letter was found approximately fifteen years ago (ca. 1991) by the donor amongst papers marked for disposal during a clean-out of the premises of a former firm of Queen Street solicitors [opposite the present-day Dingwall Building].
Letter was kept in donor's safe at his business premises until being forwarded to the Auckland Museum Library in late July, 2006.

John Aldred Luxford was born on 26 March 1854, in the Hutt Valley, Wellington, New Zealand. Educated at the school of the Reverend W. Fell, and later Wellington Grammar School, he entered the Methodist ministry at Canterbury College in 1875, where he trained under the Reverend Joseph Berry.
In 1880 he married Emma Allen Mansfield, the daughter of the Reverend John Aldred.
In 1902 he was chaplain to the 10th New Zealand Contingent during the Anglo-Boer War.
Subject Notes
Rennie MacInnes, grandson of General John MacInnes, was the Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem in 1914 until ill health forced his eventual return to his home in Cumberland, England.
