Henry Suter, the son of a prosperous silk manufacturer of Zurich, was born in Switzerland on 9 March 1841. After training as an analytical chemist, he joined his father's business, and was for some years engaged in commercial pursuits before emigrating to New Zealand aboard the 'Rimutaka' with his wife and family in 1886.

An expert conchologist, he is best known for his work on marine molluscs and substantial contribution to Frederick Hutton's 'Manual of the New Zealand Mollusca' (1880). He died in Christchurch on 31 July 1918, aged 77.

A digitised copy of the 'RMS Rimutaka' is available. (2 images)
