Provenance Details
Provenance: This collection of papers was compiled by Heeni Te Kirikaramu (later Mrs Jane Foley) whose life story encompased such events as the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi; Hone Heke's uprising and the subsequent sacking of Kororareka; the evacuation to Auckland, Te Kirikaramu's education by Church missionaries and involvement in the Waikato Land wars; the Battles of Gate Pa (where she gave water to a dying British officer) and Te Ranga; the war against the HauHau insurgency; life amongst the Irish settlers in Katikati; her return to Rotorua after the death of her second husband, Denis Foley, to practise as a Native Agent in the Native Land Court; and her active role in the emancipation and winning of the vote for New Zealand women.
The papers themselves were compiled by Te Kirikaramu in a ledger which she kept during her time as Native Agent in the law firm of Urquart and Rowe, of Rotorua. The whereabouts of the original ledger is unknown and is now regarded as being lost. It does appear, however, that Te Kirikaramu's grandson, Aperahama Te Kiri, must have had the ledger in his possession at one time as some of the entries are in his hand.
Loose copies of some, but not all, of the pages from the original ledger were at some point made and these passed into the possession of John Foley. After his death the material passed to his brother, Alfred, who created two folders containing all the available papers for presentation each to the Auckland War Memorial Museum and the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, with no restrictions on access imposed.
