The Post Guides were established in Wellington in 1926 as a branch of the Girl Guides movement to cater to handicapped girls living at home or in hospitals. A number of members mentioned in the log book suffered from infantile paralysis.

The log book appears to be written in several hands. The first half from 1927 until 1931 is possibly written by Gladys Avery and is Wellington oriented. From 1932 the reports revolve more around the Auckland Post Guide Company. Reports on activities, appointments and often the deaths of members. For further background on Post Guides see: Marie Iles' 65 years of guiding in New Zealand : the official history of the Girl Guides Association N.Z. (Inc.), 1976.

The log book contains numerous photographs of members, some in mobile daybeds, company leaders and events such as conferences. Subjects include Miss Marshall, Head of Post and Lone Guides; Mrs Huntingdon, who formed the 1st Wellington company; Peggy Watt; Nita Falkner; Elsie Couchman; Rachel Mackay; Elma Lee, of Hawera; Edna Williams, of Patea; Miss Enid Bell; Mrs Inglis, captain of 1st Auckland Post Guides; Clara Rowntree; Isabelle Ashworth; Sybil Baker; Joyce Greenhalgh; Eileen McLeod; Sidwell Hilliard; and Mrs Wilson, Chief Commissioner, Girl Guides of New Zealand, 1926-34.

Dorothea McKinstry is first mentioned in the logbook in February 1934, but there is no clear evidence as to how the log book came to be in her possession after 1938. The volume does have what appears to be auctioneers' numbers on the front cover, suggesting that she acquired it at a much later date.

  • Subject Notes
Dorothea (Dossie) McKinstry was born in March 1923, and in 1934 lived at Renall Street, Ponsonby, Auckland. She joined the Post Guides in February 1934. She is probably the same person as Thea Frogley.
