The Alpine Sports Club Inc. should not be confused with the New Zealand Alpine Club, which is a separate organisation.

The NZAC was established in 1891, with encouragement from the Alpine Club (of England, the original Alpine Club). From the beginning it was a national organisation, based in Christchurch, with provision for any centre of population in the then Colony to form a Section with officers of its own to manage local affairs. [Ref. The New Zealand Alpine Journal, Vol. 1, p. 4]

The NZAC now has ten Sections and a registered office in Christchurch. Its Archives are held at the Hocken Library, Dunedin.

There was at that time no Section of the NZAC in Auckland, and in 1929 the Alpine Sports Club was established there to foster mountaineering and tramping. This group of enthusiasts was led by Ronald Algie, who became its first president. He was a member of the NZAC and was the Professor of Law at Auckland University College. Many of the early members were his students and legal colleagues (including Jim Rose, who later became the father-in-law of Sir Edmund Hillary). Ronald Algie was later a Member of Parliament, Minister of Education and Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives. He was knighted in 1964.

  • Subject Notes
During the late 1920s a group of people associated with the University of Auckland frequently walked together under the name of 'The Sundown Strollers'.
In 1929, the inaugural Alpine Sports Club meeting was held at Prof Algie's Remuera home; in attendance were the Sundowner Strollers and six others. With a foundation membership of twenty, the Club was set up to cater for a wide range of mountain and outdoor interests including tramping, mountaineering, skiing, camping, caving, canoeing and outdoor recreation. Since its inception, Alpine Sports Clubs has grown to be the second largest tramping and skiing club in the country with over 500 members (2011).
The Alpine Sports Club owns two lodges on Mt Ruapehu with a total of 56 beds and a newly refurbished bush hut in the Waitakere ranges to the west of Auckland (2011).
The club runs popular summer camps for family members in various parts of New Zealand but mainly in the North Island. These are planned for the week between Christmas and New Year and have been very well supported since their establishment in 1969.
