The Auckland Choral Society was founded by Joseph Brown (1818-1883) in 1855, the year of his arrival in Auckland to take up a position at St John's College at Tamaki. By the end of 1855, the Society had grown from 60 to 200 voices with an orchestra of 60 and had established an Auckland Choral tradition.
