Mrs A. [Anne Nesbitt] Logan - Documents relating to the 'Moutoa Flag', 1865

documentary heritage
  • Description

Two letters from Mrs Anne Logan: one addressed to Mr White (undated), suggesting that a flag be made by the Ladies of Wanganui [Whanganui] to be presented to certain Maori chiefs and men for their assistance in saving the lives of European women and children at the battle against the Hauhau at Moutoa Island; and a second, dated 2 February 1865, in which Mrs Logan announces the date (4 February 1865) of the presentation of the flag.

Includes the text of the presentation speech (headed with the Royal Coat of Arms and printed on silk; 285 mm x 205 mm) given by Mrs Logan at the unveiling ceremony of the Moutoa monument at Moutoa Gardens in September 1865 when she presented the flag to the Maori chiefs.

Provenance: Miss White is probably the descendant of the Mr White, the recipient of the undated letter from Mrs Anne Logan.
  • Public Access Text

Entry in typed bound shelf list described this collection as: Miniature silk flag by the Ladies of Wanganui to certain Maori chiefs in recognition of their assistance in preventing a Maori attack on Wanganui. This is misleading as the "miniature silk flag", according to Smart and Bates, was the text of the speech made by Mrs Logan at the presentation ceremony, and the actual "Moutoa Flag" measured 8 feet in length by 5 feet 6 inches.

(see "The Wanganui story" by Maxwell Smart & Arthur Bates, 1972, pages 106-08)
