    Thomas Broun was born and educated in Edinburgh. After service in the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, and later in the Waikato wars, he farmed at Opotiki, and became a teacher with the Auckland Education Board before accepting an appointment as Government Entomologist from 1894 - 1905. His Manual of the New Zealand Coleoptera was published in 7 parts between 1880 - 1886.
