    Provenance: From an examination of the NZ electoral rolls, it appears that both the donor and Charles Bennet share a common connection through their involvement with hostel work at the same Auckland address, 89 Gillies Avenue, Epsom.

    Charles Bennet, MBE, or 'Charlie Y.M.' as he was known by, was the YMCA representative who operated the mobile canteen 'Te Rau Aroha' attached to the 28th Maori Battalion throughout the North African and Italian Campaigns during World War II. Te Rau Aroha was purchased in New Zealand from funds raised by Maori schoolchildren. After the war it returned to New Zealand, where it was driven by Bennet on a tour of the Maori schools. It now resides at the National Army Museum, Waiouru.
