Esther Hickson (nee Fairburn) - Journal of reminiscences [typescript copy]

documentary heritage
  • Description

Typescript copy of a small journal of reminiscences by Esther Hickson (nee Fairburn), daughter of William Thomas Fairburn, transcribed by Beverley Woolley. Describing a period from about 1828 onwards, Hickson recounts her earliest memories of life in the Bay of Islands. Of particular note are her unfavourable observations regarding the behaviour of local Maori.

An account is given of her father's involvement as one of those aboard the schooner 'Herald' when it was wrecked on the Hokianga Bar in late May, 1828. The second half of the typescript is the transcribed journal fragments.
