Subject Notes
"Veteran James Campbell, late H.M. 58th Regiment, died on Tuesday, night. He was born at Kendall, England, in 1824, and joined his regiment in 1841, landing at the Bay of Islands in 1845. With this famous regiment he was engaged at Ruapekapeka against Hone Heke and Kawiti, and in subsequent actions during the Maori war in that district. After 17 years' service, he took his discharge, being awarded an Imperial and old age pension and New Zealand war medal. He joined the Veterans' Home over five years ago, and remained there until his death. Mr. Campbell was In the Grenadier Company of the 58th. He had an imposing and dignified bearing, and was greatly respected by his comrades in the home. The funeral will take place this afternoon. A military procession will be formed from the Permanent Forces, and the interment will take place at the Veterans' Cemetery, Waikaraka."
