Auckland Museum (Reference?) file states he was born at Sapcoat, Leicestershire on 31 October 1854. Examples of his photographs can be seen in S Percy Smith, 'The Eruption of Tarawera' (1886) and R.F. Keam, Tarawera (1988), including one featuring the photographer himself (p318). The Haszard family album of photographs taken by Charles S Spencer is held by the Auckland War Memorial Museum Library.
