  • Subject Notes
George Montagu John Higginson was Assistant Paymaster on H.M.S. Curacoa, flagship of the Australian Squadron. The ship arrived in Auckland in October 1863. The Royal Naval presence was maintained by H.M. ships Curacoa, Esk, Miranda and Fawn operating out of Auckland
Daniel Manders Beere was born in Ireland in 1833 and died in Melbourne in 1909. He came to New Zealand in 1863 to act as surveyor to the Auckland Provincial Government and was active as a photographer from his arrival until the 1890s. He is said not to have been a professional lensman, but a series of views of the province of Auckland by Messrs Beere (presumably Daniel and his brother Gerald Butler Beere, captain of the Waikato Militia) was advertised by J Varty in 1864 (NZH 1 April 1864). http://0-www.aucklandcity.govt.nz.www.elgar.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/photographers/basic_search.htm
