Handwritten on verso "Random sketches in London, 1949. Used a ... white straw hat, cut off trim & plastered huge daisy all around - went to Ascot where being in the right place at the right time, Queen Elizabeth & King George VI walked past me - & she graciously smiled at me!!! She looked heavenly! Hate were all important.

"Theatre Hat" I made a hat like this for myself to wear for the ballet "Swan Lake" with Margaret Fonteyn. Saw her three times. One of the great occasions with many ballerinas was at Kelburn theatre the largest in the U.K. at this time, the first modern ballets rather like gymnastics & school uniforms"
