    James Hector (1834-1907) was born and educated in Edinburgh, Scotland, graduating from the University of Edinburgh in medicine in 1856. His interests in geology and botany led to his appointment to conduct a geological survey of Otago (1862) and Southland (1863). Director of the New Zealand Institute (1867), later the Royal Society of New Zealand (1933). The Hector's Dolphin is named after him.
