Abundant under dense Pohutukawa/Kanuka/Karo with Boxthorn forest overlying steep greywacke slopes. Growing in understorey with Gahnia lacera, Astelia banksii and Polystichum neozelandicum. Flowers distinctly purple tinged, particularly toward the base. Bracts varying from entire to distinctly bifurcate - A. bifrucatum is on the island (AK 297776) possibly a hybrid? Inflorescences lax, trending to trail from the root stock, leaves yellow green to green not glaucous.
