Field Collection Notes
In riparian forest dominated by totara, hinau, rewarewa and kowhai. Abundant on river flat but virtually impossible to collect material from as trees are very tall and foliage well out of reach. This gathering from a sucker collected from the base of a tree in deep shade. Basal few leaves are typical of S. chathamica but all other foliage is typical of S. microphylla. I assume then that this chimaera is cause by the unusual growing circumstances rather than any evidence of hybridity. DNA voucher for Massey University Sophora study.
