Common on basalt pillow lava in surge zone at extreme low tide (in very turbulent water and so extremely difficult to collected safely). Thallus yellow-brown when fresh, stems initially tufted then ± pendulous. A very common brown seaweed in this type of habitat throughout the Kermadec Islands group.
