    New Zealand, North Island, Gisborne Land District, Eastwoodhill Arboretum, O11, Hillside Pinetum, midway up hill

  • Field Collection Notes
    Small, round-canopied tree, Ht ca 4m, dbh 10cm. Compact tree with regularly whorled branches, curved upwards. Bark grey-brown, split, ridged. Branches pale brown rough, scaley. Needles short, stiff, sharp, mid-green, semi-glossy, in 2s, sheath grey. Cones hanging down, up to 5 around the branch circumference. Small cone up to 5cm tall, mid-brown, mod-smooth scales.
    NE facing mod-steep sloping hillside. Sunny, open situation.
    Japanese Black Pine.
