Description: Correspondence, notes, drawings (Maori calabash designs) and photographs compiled by T.W.G.H. Hammond. Includes a handwritten account concerning the building of Hotunui, as told by Mereana Mokomoko, widow of the late chief W.H. Taipari, 1898 (8 leaves). Box 2 contains reports by William Hammond on Maori households at Waitakaruru that were affected by the 1918 influenza pandemic. It includes two separate lists outlining the dates of death and burials for the following 12 Maori from the Waitakaruru settlement: Whitu Tainui, Wi Ngakai, Rangi Tahora, Rangituata Taumori, Tokohau Ngakai, Angel Ngakai, Teata Topia, Tu te Paka Ohewa, Pita Taranaki, Kura Mihingarangi, Pita te Tai, and William Brown. The sex, age, date of death, place and date of burial is noted for 9 of the 12 individuals. The remaining 3 have just the dates of death and/or date of burial (Note: This item is extremely fragile and is not for public issue).
